"Signs of Spring" is an augmented photography series by Justin C.M. Brown.
Hold up wait this is my website I don't have to write in third person. It's just me and you here. (thanks for coming!)
Beginning the 2023 spring quarter at UCLA, I was immediately captivated by the range of beautiful flowers which were beginning to bloom all over campus. After about a week, I realized I was looking at the same flowers, but I genuinely did not know any of their names. So, this series was originally created to help me learn the names of all the flowers on campus. True story, now when I see the flowers which I've photographed, I say hello as though we were friends. I've noticed that focusing on one subject for a whole series has been really fulfilling. I loved flowers before I began this, they've shown up in my work for a long time (see the slideshow below!).
But with this new knowledge... I love flowers even more, and the Earth along with it.
I hope this series encourages you to see the flowers in your life with renewed appreciation.
Enjoying flowers is free, easy, and full of unexpected insights about life in this universe.
In gratitude, Justin C.M. Brown
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation
for the staff and volunteers of the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden,
as well as the entire UCLA Groundskeeping, Landscaping, and Custodial Staff
for their INCREDIBLE effort in making UCLA such a beautiful oasis on this planet.
Without their excellent work, this series would not be possible.
My sincerest thanks, Justin
I'm honored to recieve the 2023 UCLA Library Undergraduate Art Project Prize as part of UCLA Undergraduate Research Week. Additional thanks to Allison Berendetti, Virginia Steel, Karina Valdez, and Matthew Vest for this award.
Congratulations to all my fellow award recipients!
