These songs were made with reckless abandon and unhinged creativity.
It's me, Justin C.M. Brown, and this page explains a little bit about this music.
WHY BROWNTOWN SESSIONS 123?
WHEN WAS THIS MADE?
WHO HELPED?
jimmy
I have to start with my my co-producer and right hand man, Jimmy Volker aka popstarpirate.
Jimmy is a long time friend and original member of the brownsbrothers
jimmy and I have made music together for quite a long time
none of this music would be possible without jimmy
materially, because it was entirely produced on his equipment
(which he would generously bring to Browntown at the start of each Session)
but importantly because he would come over every night from start to finish
as a contributor, a creative collaborator, and as a recording tech
and i'm incredibly grateful for his presence and contribution to these songs

Take My Time feat. Trent Fabio
Music and Lyrics by Trent Fabio
Trent Fabio - Vocals, Guitars, Bass
JCMB - Drums
Production Notes:
Apparently Trent wrote this on the way to the session,
and just knocked the whole thing out in no time flat.
Lyrics:
I got the word on the low
It’s time to go to the show
They don’t even really know
I take my time
I take my time
I got my head in the sand
With my super tight band
Got you in the palm of my hand
I take my time
I take my time
I take my time
I got a long way to go
But I'm gonna take it slow
Only love will make it grow
Cause I take my time
You say you got somewhere to be
Well that don’t matter much to me
They say that patience is the key
Well I take my time
I take my time
I take my time
I take my time

garbage to glory explanation
this was written by Erica and Justin mid-session
as a kind of anti-sleazeball anthem
possibly inspired by raleigh nightlife
i wanted to make something that was halfway between prayer in C and telepopmusik's breathe
i wrote the lyrics to this song a million years ago
and originally had Danny Armand sing it at a session in Hollywood
but i prefer the female version as a form of empowerment
rather than typical male-gaze objectification
i have always thought of this song as some kind of dark vampiric burlesque scene
this song was made from a weird approach where i recorded each piano key playing a different rhythm separately
i was hoping for a dj shadowish kind of feel
i swear i wrote a verse to this but it just didn't need it
i wrote the lyrics to this to an emperor steve song which i recorded but then decided i liked the instrumental better
it started with a recording of hollis playing a little riff on viola
but it really came together when trent put guitars on it
ween is one of my favorite studio bands of all time
and with their example i went towards this
it kinda felt gorillaz-ish to me as well
shoutout jimmy for the weird vocals
it was usually my intention to include a cover on each session
and this one... i just love the original but i felt like it could be so much more intimate... the drums on the original kinda said (alright well go then), and just watching it a bunch of times i saw the choir
erica and jimmy really crushed it on these vocals
this song is dedicated to those we have lost and i have a vivid memory of just CRYING while trying to record the vocals. this song is really special to me.
the strings at the end... just amazing
to be honest, i don't know where this came from
or why it's partially in spanish
this one is just pure creative energy
again shoutout to jimmy for the amazing vocal
this was originally written as a piano ballad,
just as sentimental sappy as could possibly be
but i was living in florida at the time and my friend Mario is an avid bachata producer and DJ, and we were talking about doing a song together... i generally think of bachata as romantic music and so i went with the only thing that made sense.
i particularly love this song because it's so far outside my entire catalog
I wrote this song forever ago based on a simple chord pattern
and it's kind of inspired by a frank zappa quote
"love is not the end of the world, it is the beginning"
i was living in jersey city and was thinking about that quote
and kinda dreamed up the scenario
but i still firmly agree with the 'beautiful truth'
"[they] who seek [they] shall find"
